Chapter Eighteen

“Seriously, I think I’m going to have to keep you,” Elena smiles softly as Lana finally falls asleep.

“I’ll be back to visit as much as possible. You know that you couldn’t keep me away if you tried.” I remind her.

“You better be, or I’ll come and find you,” she warns jokingly, or at least I think she’s joking.

“Where’s Inferno?” Jensen asks, “I’ve hardly seen him since we’ve been here.”

“Yeah, I’m actually surprised he came to the party yesterday. He doesn’t do crowds or people and is much happier off doing things around the compound or in the garage working on the bikes. He’ll be here somewhere, out of the way in the shadows probably. He won’t leave the girls and me at the moment. That’s one of the things I love the most about him. Once he’s let you in, that’s it, he’ll become your fiercest protector.” She explains, a look of pure love crossing her face. “Anyway, sorry I got a little bit side-tracked then. Do you want to put her down?”

“Not really, but I probably should, we’ve got a lot to do, and I don’t want anyone to think I’m slacking. Where do you want me to put her?”

“I’m set up over here. Blade’s with Lori,” Elena says as we walk towards a shaded area where she’s set up the baby chairs, Blade’s gently bouncing Lori’s seat with his foot, and she’s fast asleep just like her sister.

I carefully place Lana down in her own seat and then turn back to Elena. “I will be back for cuddles soon.”

Elena’s chuckle follows me as I walk back over to the table to grab some paint and a brush. I don’t trust myself on a ladder, so I think I’ll stick to painting around the windows and doing the edges. Looking around, I soon find the other guys and make my way over to them.

“Hey, Firecracker,” Luc greets me, dropping the paint roller and enfolding me in his arms.

“Hey, Luci, are you okay?” I ask.

“Yeah,” he murmurs into my hair, “I just really missed you, and I’m worried about Elena. Less than I was before but still worried. We have no idea how many men he’s got on his side. Even Noel didn’t know.”

“I know, but we can deal with this, and we’ve got plenty of backup. These men are as well equipped as we are to deal with this sort of situation. They will all be safe. We all will.”

“I know you’re right, but I can’t help worrying about all the unknowns. I’m also fed up of Blake being after you, and then I feel bad because that’s what’s really scaring the shit out of me, the thought of him getting you.”

I pull him closer. I can’t really say much to that because it’s something that I’m worried about as well. He seems to sense that I don’t have much to say to that and pulls me closer. I sink into his embrace, soaking in the warmth and protection he’s offering me.
